From ROC Clinic, we have driven an unprecedented medical and technological milestone by performing the first national telesurgery between two locations in Madrid, as well as the first between two European Union countries (Belgium–Spain).
On October 13 and 14, two pioneering remote robotic radical prostatectomies were carried out, marking a before-and-after moment in the history of Spanish and European surgery — all performed using the advanced Toumai robotic system.
On October 13, Dr. Javier Romero-Otero, Director of the Urology Department at HM Hospitales and ROC Clinic, operated from the console installed at HM Universitario Montepríncipe, while the patient was located at HM Sanchinarro with Dr. Ricardo Brime, Head of the Robotic Surgery Unit at ROC Clinic, who supervised the on-site teams to ensure flawless coordination between both hospitals. The operation achieved a seamless fusion of technology and medical expertise, symbolizing precision and innovation in the service of the patient.
The interventions on this day represent the first telesurgery performed in Spain using the Toumai robot. They were designed as a national validation and consolidation of protocols before taking the international leap to the third procedure performed the following day — the first robotic radical prostatectomy by telesurgery conducted in Europe and directed to Spain using this same system.
On October 14, a further step was taken with the first telesurgery in Europe directed to Spain. The operation took place from the Orsi Academy in Ghent (Belgium), marking the third telesurgery ever performed from this center and the first international procedure carried out in Spain. From Ghent, Dr. Ricardo Brime performed the operation remotely, while the team at HM Sanchinarro, led by Dr. Juan Justo, Deputy Director of ROC Clinic, assisted the patient and ensured seamless coordination between both sites. The procedure was completed with the utmost precision and safety, reflecting the technical excellence and joint effort of all teams involved.
The press and television have covered this historic milestone in Spanish and European surgery.
