Movember and the Role of Modern Urology in Men’s Health

Every November, Movember invites us to look directly at a topic that should be part of everyday conversation but is still a taboo for many men: our health.
Beyond the symbolic moustaches, this international initiative aims to promote dialogue and raise awareness about essential issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and, above all, the importance of prevention.

For years, I have seen how many men postpone their check-ups or visit the urologist only when symptoms can no longer be ignored. And the truth is that, in most cases, early detection makes all the difference.

The numbers are clear: prostate cancer remains the most common cancer among men in Spain. Fortunately, it is also one of those with the best prognosis when detected early. Thanks to advances in modern urology — from early detection tests to robotic surgery — we can now offer treatments that are increasingly precise, minimally invasive, and associated with better functional outcomes.

Robotic surgery, in particular, has marked a true revolution. It allows for extremely precise procedures, reducing complications, shortening hospital stays, and speeding up recovery. This technology has completely transformed the landscape of prostate cancer treatment and has significantly improved patients’ quality of life.

But technology alone is not enough. All these advances lose part of their value if we do not accompany them with active prevention: talking openly with patients, explaining risk factors, promoting healthy habits, and encouraging regular check-ups—especially from the age of 45, or earlier if there is a family history.

Movember is a reminder that prevention remains our best tool.
Early detection saves lives, improves outcomes, and allows us to offer a form of urology that is more effective, more humane, and better prepared for the future.
