First surgical telementoring in Europe, a step forward toward connected surgery

There are moments that mark a before and after in the history of medicine — and this has been one of them. Our team at ROC Clinic has performed the first robotic surgery telementoring in Europe, a milestone that demonstrates how far technology can go in connecting knowledge, bridging distances, and improving patient care.

The procedure was a single-port robotic partial nephrectomy (SARA) mentored by Dr. Simone Crivellaro, an internationally renowned expert in robotic surgery, who participated from Chicago (USA), guiding every step of the operation in real time.

Having his live mentorship, thousands of kilometers away, is tangible proof of the enormous potential of telementoring — a tool that brings together the world’s leading specialists without the need to share the same operating room.

All of this was made possible thanks to the technological platform of ABEX Excelencia Robótica, which ensured a stable, secure, and seamless connection throughout the procedure. Its reliability allowed for perfect communication between Madrid and Chicago, with no latency or interference, proving that today’s robotic systems are ready to make international collaborative surgery a reality.

These kinds of experiences reinforce the idea that knowledge must be shared, and that technology can and should be a means to amplify talent and enhance clinical outcomes.

As Director of ROC Clinic, I feel deeply proud of my team — of our preparation, curiosity, and ability to face each new challenge with confidence. The success of everyone involved in this surgery reflects the common path we have followed for years: placing Spanish urology at the forefront of global robotic surgery.

This first telementoring experience is just the beginning — another step toward a future where operating rooms will be connected, specialists will collaborate in real time across countries, and patients will benefit from a more global, precise, and human medicine.
